Work Experience
We are always looking for helpful hands around the animal sanctuary!
If you are a student interested in gaining experience working with
animals, below are some details of what you can expect from a work placement at
Jungle Fortress Animal Sanctuary:
Handling
We have a wide range of animals ranging from tame to challenging.
During your work experience with us you can expand on your handling
techniques as well your confidence with working around a variety of
different animals!
Enclosure Design
We are constantly changing and improving our enclosures, striving to
fulfil all the needs and requirements of a particular animal. For
example: heat, lighting, humidity, substrate, enrichment, and airflow
throughout an enclosure must all be considered. Creating a species
specific enclosure will be covered in detail.
Enrichment
At the sanctuary we try and make sure the animals are always occupied
and have something to do! Enrichment of their lives is very important
for their welfare. You may be involved in changing over toys for the
parrots, food enrichment for the more exotic species, changing
enclosure fixtures for the small mammals and social contact with the
animals (Playing with them!).
Basic Husbandry
This is the daily running of the animal sanctuary, which mainly
involves cleaning, feeding, watering and maintaining appropriate
conditions (for example humidity and temperature monitoring).
Additionally this also includes basic land maintenance such as
fencing, housing, digging, sweeping and weeding.
Species Identification
As you will be working with a large variety of species on site there
is a great opportunity to interact and learn about all kinds of exotic
and domestic animals.
