Our Aim
Our aim is to change people’s perceptions from animals being merely a source of food or amusement to incredible, sentient creatures that need our help and care. We feel the best way to do this is through our educational workshops. Workshops Based Around The National Curriculum
We go out to schools around south east England to provide a fun and exotic afternoon in and out (if it’s a nice day) of the class room. We try to make the animal workshops as interactive as possible without compromising the animals’ welfare. The great thing about our workshop set up is that teachers are able to base their academic year around the points we highlight, using our sessions to either begin, end, or fully cover a topic. We offer a diverse 2 hour workshop full of animals, fun, and art, which offers a new perspective in teaching, bringing the national curriculum to life. Making Learning Fun
The animal workshops are designed to be as interactive as possible, while working within the framework of the national curriculum. Sessions begin with a 40 minute close encounter with the animals, followed by a 20 minute quiz based on what the pupils have learned. We have based the second hour of the workshop around crafts to encourage team work, creativity and physical activity. During this hour the class will work either individually, or in groups, to create a variety of items which can be used to decorate the classroom, or as the basis for future projects. We also use the toy or item made in either a game or quiz at the end. We highly recommend a two hour workshop as the pupils can make the most of the animals and expand their own learning through asking our enthusiastic staff any questions they may have. What makes us unique from similar organisations is that as well as focusing on the animals themselves, we use them to illustrate issues faced in the wild. This means that as well as being educationally enriching, we can direct our sessions around specific areas of the national curriculum. For a detailed listing of the national curriculum and syllabus areas covered in our workshops, please see our online brochure here. What We Offer
The workshop package is designed so that an average class of 30 can: - Enjoy an interactive workshop based around the key-stage curriculum, this includes an encounter with some of the animals we keep and animal oriented games, which encourages learning from a different angle. - Sponsor one of the animals for a year, this includes a personalised certificate for every pupil and the conscience of helping a rescued animal. - In many of the craft based sessions, the pupils will make or decorate an item which they get to take home with them. - The class will receive a poster of the animal they have adopted, as well as an information sheet on the species to put up in the class room for all to see!
Everything's Covered The workshop package costs £5 per pupil as this covers our costs and any profits made go directly to Atlantis Safari Trust. For a second hour we charge half the price of one hour, making a cost of £2.50 per pupil! • All our staff have been CRB approved and are experienced animal keepers. • We always make sure the class room is as we found it after the workshop. • We have a risk assessment for the workshops, please ask for details. • We provide all materials for the workshop. • We are covered by public liability insurance, of up to £5,000,000. • There is a maximum of 30 pupils per workshop, with a minimum charge for 25 pupils. • All we ask is that if no pupils have allergies to fur please let us know so that we can bring some furry animals! Tailor Made Animal Workshop For You If our animal workshop packages aren't what you were looking for and want a workshop to cover a specific topic? We pride ourselves on our versatility and are able to cover a variety of environmental issues and subjects. If you would like us to tailor a workshop to your subject simply email us with what subject you would like us to cover along with what sort of animals you would like us to bring along to illustrate the topic. Subjects could include: desert habitats, rain forests, ecosystems and life-cycles (click here for our living classroom project). For higher level workshops, taxonomy, animal husbandry, animal welfare and conservation. Although at the moment we have only put together workshops for Key stage 1 and 2 we are currently working on Keystage 3 and 4, and hope to have them online within the next couple of months! But don't let this put you off as we can tailor make a workshop to the specific subject the class are studying. Sensory Workshops For special needs schools for children with learning disabilities we offer a 1hour sensory workshop. To this we bring very friendly and very different types of animals.
These workshops are not only about seeing what the animals look like but making a connection with them and holding and touching the animals giving the children confidence and making them happy! In the workshops while feeling the different types of animals we talk about why they feel different to each other. For example an animal with rough skin such as a bearded dragon lives in the desert where there is sand and rocks which are also rough. School Animal Adoption If our animal workshops aren't what you are looking for, how about a school animal adoption? An animal adoption can be great if you are looking to fund raise for a good cause also in an adoption pack you will receive: - A Personalised Certificate of adoption for the school - A profile of the animal you have adopted with information about the species - A Poster of the animal you have adopted - And a visit from the Jungle Fortress Animal Sanctuary to one of the school assembly's so that everyone can meet the animal! For more information about our animal adoption packs see the 'Adoptions' page of our website, or contact us for more details. Animal Welfare Our top priority is the welfare and care of the animals we house at the sanctuary. For this reason we ask that unless a school is booking a full day of workshops with us (either four 1 hour workshop packages or two 2 hour workshop packages), to please book the afternoon workshop slots. This is so that the animals do not travel for longer than necessary in rush hour traffic, therefore reducing stress. Where we are able to, we do our best to avoid causing any undue stress to the animals. Travel If a party takes longer than 1 hour to get to there is an extra £30 for petrol costs.
To see how long it will take for us to travel to you type in our postcode in any route planner; KT12 5DX.
Please note that we add on 30minutes to all journeys below 1 hour as this provides a cushion to allow for parking time, traffic jams and unexpected delays. For journeys longer than 1 hour we add on around 45minutes as we have found that we do not only need time for parking, and unexpected delays on route but sat navs are more often than not wrong (especially through central London)!
